BAS-CÔTÉ

The fifth group exhibition of the Kimera Collective, bas-côté, offered a singular interpretation of the notion of kinship developed by Donna Haraway. As part of the Printemps Carougeois, the exhibition brought together five artists from Collectif Kimera: Cyan Huescar, Hsuan Lee, Maude Renevier, Vincent Grange & Tanguy Troubat (Souplex), along with four guest artists: Juli Sando, Gemma Ushengewe, Adina Malina and Giulia Essyad.

Through a wide variety of media, the exhibition explored forms of kinship — chosen families, life cycles, relationships to oneself, to alter egos, and more — that escape traditional genealogical models. Kinship was approached here as a practice: that of creating human, and even more-than-human, connections that reshape the ways we coexist in and with the world. For the artists, bas-côté thus became a space of refuge and reinvention made possible.

Among the works presented at Espace Dukat — transformed for the occasion into a true laboratory — were a performance of human molting, fictional creatures subverting taxonomic logics, and a living room installation questioning inherited models of the religious family. Performances, readings, and DJ sets extended the exhibition and invited visitors to step behind the curtain and take part in this collective celebration.
